Catherine Zeta Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones was seeking maximum attention as she stepped out in New York last night in bold red asymmetric dress.

And she got it - but not for the right reasons.

The actress - once lauded for her enviable hourglass figure - looked a shadow of her former self as she attended a charity event with her husband Michael Douglas.

Not even clever draping on the stylish frock was enough to conceal her dramatically reduced frame.

Shrinking frame: Catherine Zeta-Jones looked incredibly thin as she attended a fundraiser in Manhattan last night

The Welsh brunette appeared gaunt and boney, sparking fresh concerns for her health.

Catherine has been steadily shrinking in recent months, which is likely the result performing in A Little Night Music on Broadway eight times a week.

But stress is thought to be a factor too - she has been supporting her husband in the wake of his son Cameron's five-year jail sentencing for drug dealing.

But last night the pair tried to put their family drama aside temporarily as they supported the Robin Hood Foundation, a charitable organisation that targets poverty in New York City, at the Javits Centre in Manhattan.

Its board includes luminaries such as film producer Harvey Weinstein and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Last year the gala raised $72.7 million for 200 of New York's poverty fighting organisations.

The entertainment at the event - tickets to the event cost $2,000 and $3,000 for individuals, $30,000, to $250,000 for tables - was led by Stevie Wonder.

And Catherine's presence also had a purpose, as she was charged with securing additional pledges from the hedge fund manager and bankers in attendance.

Actor Michael J Fox, actress Kerry Washington, tennis champ, John McEnroe and domestic goddess Martha Stewart also attended the event which was co-chaired by Google's Inc chief executive Eric Schmidt.

On the weekend the couple were recently seen celebrating Mother's Day with their family in the city, which is still on edge after the recent failed bomb attack in Times Square.

And as Catherine, Michael and their children Dylan and Carys were on their way home from a Mother's Day brunch police and the bomb squad converged on the area.

A 4x4 parked near the Museum of Natural History, had come under suspicion, and authorities were called in the investigate.

A source told RadarOnline that when the Douglas children became concerned about all the activity on their street, Michael calmly reassured them that it was just 'because it's Mother's Day.'
