Whether acne is a reoccurring problem or just surfaces as the occasional pimple, knowing the proper way to get rid of acne should be the first tool in everyone's beauty box.

  1. Start or continue a basic routine of cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Know what your skin type is and use the appropriate cleanser. Wash and moisturize first thing in the morning and before bedtime. Rub the cleanser in gently, not pulling or scrubbing, which will only damage the skin further.

  2. Treat blemishes by dabbing a small amount of over-the-counter acne fighting medication onto the pimple, starting with the mildest strength of medicine. Avoid picking, popping or pressing on any blemish. This can cause scarring and spread the bacteria, creating more acne.

  3. Fight or prevent allover acne problems with a medicated face wash made especially for oily completions. After cleansing, apply a thin layer of salicylic acid over the entire face using upward sweeping motions.

  4. Choose makeup, moisturizers and sun protection that are oil free and labeled non-comedogenic, which will not clog skin pores. Most mineral makeup is a good choice.

  5. Avoid touching your face with your hands because this brings more oil, dirt and bacteria to the face. Avoid resting your chin in your hands or fingering a current blemish. If possible, pin hair back from the face to keep the hair's natural oils away from the face.
