Shahid KapurShahid Kapur could well be one of the top actors that Bollywood has today. But there was a time till about 7-8 years back when he was trying to find an entry into the industry. Some such bitter sweet moments from his struggling days life have been incorporated in his upcoming release ‘Chance Pe Dance” .

“I play a dancer in the film. Chance Pe Dance reminded me about my past. It is about struggling actors. About a guy who is trying to make it big. It’s about getting a chance to dance. There are scenes where he is getting rejected in auditions and I could relate to that. Sometimes when you go for an audition, in the middle of the dialogue they say ‘Ab bas, next’ and believe me it is a terrible feeling. You feel like somebody has slapped you across your face,” says Shahid.

In the film, Shahid's character is shown to be driving an old car, struggling to pay rent, unable to find a decent meal in a reasonably good restaurant, short of money to buy petrol but still trying to look good and be presentable enough to walk in for auditions.
“And believe me, I have gone through this all,” confesses Shahid.

“Also in the film I have a second-hand Zen and back then, when I was struggling, I had a second-hand Maruti 800. This was before ‘Ishq Vishk’ released. All budding actors would meet up for rehearsals every evening and I would be one of them. Even character artistes who came for the rehearsals would come in their Honda Citys and big cars. I would be so embarrassed to see those cars that I would park mine right at the end. I connect with that part in the film.

“In fact I couldn't afford even my Maruti 800 but then it would have been very embarrassing to report for an audition or meet a producer by travelling in an auto rickshaw, so I had to somehow own and maintain it. Now I have a Range Rover.”

Narrating a couple of more incidents, Shahid reveals, “Sometimes I would be short of petrol and didn't have even have Rs. 100 spare with me to buy more fuel, so I used to hitch a ride with a friend. In fact I have been caught in a situation where I ate street food to save some money. No, I am not trying to glamorise or romanticise the entire struggle part but something like this a part and parcel of the entertainment industry.”

With “Chance Pe Dance” all set to be Shahid’s first release (on January 15), it would be interesting to see how many more real life elements (if not autobiographical in true sense) are unleashed once the entire drama unfolds.

“When I look back at the time I did my first music video. I feel fortunate. Not many people make it to the top and I am so glad I didn’t give up,” says Shahid.
