The actress-and-singer had no idea her hockey-player lover - who she has been dating for over two years - was planning to get down on one knee during a romantic holiday in Hawaii last week.
Her sister, Haylie Duff, revealed: "She was completely surprised. I don't think that happens all the time. I think most of the time people figure it out or have some idea that it's going to happen, and I think it's great he was able to do a surprise like that for her."

Although exact details of the proposal remain secret, the 29-year-old sportsman's gesture was apparently "very romantic" and Hilary's family is ecstatic by the news.

Haylie added: "I adore him. He's wonderful... very romantic."

The 22-year-old beauty is apparently still in shock about the engagement and hasn't begun planning the ceremony itself yet.

According to People.com, Haylie, 25, said: "They just got engaged a few days ago. I don't even know if she's thinking of the wedding yet."

On Friday (19.02.10) a spokesperson for the couple confirmed their happy news.

They said: "Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie were engaged this weekend while vacationing in Hawaii. After having been together for over two years, they are very excited to share this happy news. They are thankful for all of your warm wishes."
