Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu sashayed on the ramp in a yellow and beige sari at the inaugural show of the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai on March 5 for her close friend and designer Rocky S.
The actress, who is mostly seen in bright and happy colours was a bit apprehensive about wearing the dull hue but Rocky took her into confidence and the end result was worth the try, as Bipasha looked simple yet elegant in the light shade.
"When I showed Bipasha the colour of the sari, she was apprehensive. But she trusts me completely. After it was draped on her, she just loved the colour," Rocky told IANS at the post show conference here.
"She tried a new colour today and she was looking beautiful in it," he added.
Matching the sari with a perfect ruby and diamond set, the designer said that the emphasis was on the neck line to make sure that the diamond complements the sari.
Rocky said that his collection is for today's women who have great body and love to experiment with colours.
"It's a traditional Indian line, mostly aimed at a younger crowd with softer designs. The colours are very soft. There are ivories, corals in the design, the cuts are softer, the fabrics are much cooler for the summer. There is very little embellishment but in the right place and at the right time," explained Rocky.
The saris, dresses and kurta-churidars, made of fabrics like fabrics like chiffons, georgettes and net, were in various shades of beiges, ivory, pale yellow, peach, nude and blue.
Bipasha and Rocky S have known each other for over a decade and the designer says she looks perfect in a sari, contrary to the popular view that only western outfits suit her. And he went all the way to Kolkata to buy saris for the actress to wear in a forthcoming film.
"People feel that she looks good only in western outfits. That's not true. She is a very simple girl who looks good in everything. Personally, I feel she looks perfect in a sari because she is a very traditional girl and a sari reflects that trait," Rocky S said.
Rocky is working with Bipasha in director Priyadarshan's untitled movie in which the actress plays a middle-class Bengali woman.
"You will see Bipasha in big bindis and beautiful saris. I had to go all the way to Kolkata to purchase saris for her," he said.
So was it a difficult task?
"Well, Bipasha is a Bengali girl and she has sharp Bengali features...So I didn't have to do much. But I can tell you one thing that the audience will love her in the movie and this look. She is looking simply beautiful," Rocky said.
Rocky has also designed for the actress in upcoming movie ‘Lamhaa’ in which she plays a Kashmiri girl. And after an association going back over 10 years, the designer says the two now "complement" each other.
"Bipasha is a very close friend. I understand her body language completely. Ever since she started her career, I have been designing for her. Over the period of years our bond has become so strong that we complement each other," he said.
"It's her trust in me and my designs that keeps our relationship going," he added.
Rocky's Bollywood clientele also includes John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty.
