Nicole Kidman

New York magazine’s Vulture blog says that Nicole Kidman is planning to star in “The Wedding Doctor,” a film they describe as somewhat like a female “Hitch.” More precisely, it’s about a “relationship analyst” who advises couples before they marry. It’s all nifty cool until she meets a pair of clients and decides she’d be a better match for the husband to be than his fiancee. Apparently deciding that love trumps professional ethics and career, she goes all out to win him from his wife to be. No doubt there will be some catfights and the kind of over-the-top bitchiness that Hollywood loves to put women through onscreen. Drinks or food will be spilled, dresses torn, and dirty tricks played, I guess. You know, just like real life.

As Vulture points out, Nicole may be playing a role similar to the one Will Smith played in “Hitch,” but she hardly has any box office cred; in fact, it’s been a while since she had a hit. To be fair, she was hardly the sole reason last year’s highly-touted “Nine” was a bust; that was an all-around failure of execution). Nevertheless, she really needs to be associated with something that doesn’t get that bust/failure label.

I’ve always liked Nic and wish her well. She’s been working on some small-scale independent projects, such as an adaptation of the play “Rabbit-Hole,” that seemed designed to restore her artistic reputation than enhance her name as a box office draw. One suspects she might not really care about the latter. But having a few hits can help a person get the money and exposure for passion projects, so she might be going for this role in the hopes that it will help support things she really wants to do. That said, “The Wedding Doctor” sounds flat out awful
