Paul McCartney finds the modern vision of fame "scary".

The 67-year-old former Beatles singer and songwriter doesn't recognise the fame which young stars enjoy today, as he feels much of it is removed from people's talent.

He told BBC Radio 4 when the Beatles started out in 1960: "You were looking to be famous via being very talented, and working hard and coming up through the ranks.

"Now what's sold to young stars is they'll have security, a limousine, it's this sort of modern package that I think is a little bit scary. I for one don't like all of that. I don't like limos."

'Eleanor Rigby' singer Paul added he can sometimes find his global fame "pretty annoying" but has set up his own ways of dealing with it.

He said: "I have rules. I'm happy to talk to people on a one-to-one human basis but the minute they turn me into this celebrity that I'm pretending not to be, I sort of say no."

"What was great was when you had one telephone under the stairs and when you weren't in, you weren't in and there wasn't even an answering machine.

"It would be easier to say I wish it was like it was when I was a kid, but things can't stay the same, times move."
