Sandra BullockSandra Bullock joked that she will have liposuction and acquire an English accent in preparation for her big moment at the Oscars.

The 45-year-old is favourite to land the best actress Academy Award for her role as a feisty Memphis mother in The Blind Side, an uplifting tale about a wealthy family who take in a homeless teenager.

It is her first Oscar nomination, and while her rivals were glued to their television screens for the 5.30am announcement, Bullock was tucked up in bed. "I was asleep like a little tiny baby," she said.

Asked by the Today show how she would prepare for the March 7 ceremony, she joked: "I do believe some liposuction is in order, a very strict diet regime, and I will acquire a very light English accent. I was going to say that I should start wearing glasses, but I already wear glasses, so I am already sort of there."

As a star with a neat line in self-deprecating humour, Bullock will no doubt be amused to know that she could become the first actress to win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year.

Earlier this week, Bullock was shortlisted for a Razzie, or Golden Raspberry, which celebrate the worst that Hollywood has to offer. The film in question was All About Steve, a "comedy" in which Bullock played a crossword compiler who stalks a TV cameraman.

The Los Angeles Times called it "majestically unfunny", while Rolling Stone described it as "unwatchable".

Razzies founder John Wilson said: "She could be the first person ever to win a Razzie and an Oscar in the same weekend."

For every hit in Bullock's career - Speed, Miss Congeniality - there have been a string of duds, including The Lake House and Hope Floats.

However, last year she scored a double triumph by starring in not one but two box office hits: The Blind Side and The Proposal.

The Blind Side is based on the true story of Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy white Southerner who provided a home for Michael Oher, a talented teenage footballer who had been passed around several foster families. With her support, he became a professional NFL player.

At first, Bullock turned down the role because she was not confident about playing a real person. She changed her mind after meeting Tuohy.

Her performance has already earned a Golden Globe.

Reacting to the Oscar nomination, the actress said: "No-one expected much of this film, so every time these things have happened - I am still blown away."
