Supermodel Naomi Campbell escaped criminal charges after allegedly slapping and punching her chauffeur.

The British model is unlikely to be interviewed by police after the alleged incident in New York.

Driver Miodrag Mejdina, 27, claimed the supermodel attacked him while he was driving her around the city.

He said Miss Campbell, 39, was sitting in the back seat of the black Cadillac Escalade when she allegedly flew into a rage and punched him.

When the driver stopped his car in midtown Manhattan to call the police at about 3pm yesterday, Miss Campbell allegedly jumped out and fled on foot.

Police said the chauffeur, who had been hired for the day, suffered bruising to his right eye but did not say what prompted the alleged attack.

New York police yesterday issued a 'harassment report' after consultation with the district attorney's office because no officer witnessed what took place in the black Cadillac Escalade. The report does not carry any penalty.

Despite Mejdina receiving hospital treatment for bruising and a swelling under the eye, he refused to press charges.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said: 'He said Ms. Campbell had struck him in the back of the head or neck while he was driving, causing him to hit his head on the steering wheel.

'We're looking to talk to her. We anticipate that will happen.

It has also been claimed Miss Campbell became angry because she suspected Mejdina, who previously drove her Russian boyfriend Vladimir Doronin, for covering up his indiscretions a year ago when he was Doronin's driver.

Mejdina spoke to a traffic agent, who alerted police. Campbell was not at the scene when officers arrived, police said.

The driver told police he picked Campbell up at a Manhattan hotel and was taking her to Astoria Studios, a TV and film studio complex in Queens, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.

'There shouldn't be a rush to judgement,' her spokesman Jeff Raymond said. 'Naomi will cooperate voluntarily, and there is more to the story than meets the eye.'

It isn't the first time the London-born model has found herself in trouble with the law over her violent tantrums.

In 2000, she pleaded guilty to assault in Toronto after she attacked an assistant and hit her around the head with a jewel-encrusted mobile phone.

In 2007, she was sentenced in a New York court to a week's community service sweeping floors and scrubbing toilets after pleading guilty to misdemeanour assault. She had hurled her mobile phone at a maid after a pair of her jeans went missing.

And two years ago, she pleaded guilty to kicking and spitting at police at Heathrow after luggage went missing. She was sentenced to 200 hours community

She has also been sued by several former employees, who have accused her of violent outbursts.

Last night, Miss Campbell's spokesman Jeff Raymond insisted the model would cooperate with police, adding: 'There shouldn't be a rush to judgement. There is more to the story than meets the eye.'

London-born Miss Campbell became one of the world’s top supermodels after she was discovered at the age of 15.

In recent years Campbell has attempted to cultivate a calmer public image, and has often been seen at charity functions with the Prime Minister's wife Sarah Brown.
