Amy RobachFormer Melrose Place star Andrew Shue and Weekend Today anchor Amy Robach were married Saturday afternoon in New York City.

The couple, who met last April at a book party and got engaged in September, exchanged vows at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, adjacent to the Hudson River. And it was an extra special occasion for Robach, who walked down the aisle on her 37th birthday. Shue’s mother, Anne Harms, officiated the ceremony, and the two wrote their own vows.

Shue, 42, and Robach, 37, are recently divorced – and the wedding party consisted of Shue's three sons with ex-wife Jennifer Hageney and Robach's two daughters with her ex-husband, Tim McIntosh.

"The wedding was absolutely beautiful," a Today show rep, who attended the ceremony, tells PEOPLE. "Amy and Andrew were beaming."

As for the reception, the rep says, "The decor was simple and there were lots of candles. The guest list was fairly small. They wanted an intimate feel with close friends and family."

Approximately 120 guests attended the ceremony, including Shue’s actress sister Elizabeth and her husband Davis Guggenheim, director of 2006’s An Inconvenient Truth, as well as Robach's NBC colleagues Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, Kathie Lee Gifford, as well as CBS News' Rick Kaplan and MSNBC's Contessa Brewer.

Aside from the writing their own vows, the couple veered away from tradition in other areas, as well. "Instead of a gift, they asked guests to give them their two favorite songs – one dance, one love – and they were played throughout the night," says the rep. "And instead of wedding cake, they’re having a birthday cake."

Adds the rep: "Amy even walked across the street from work to Saks [Fifth Avenue] to buy her dress and shoes – off the rack!" As for her kicks, Robach picked out Christian Louboutin shoes.

Shue and Robach are wasting no time getting their honeymoon started: They plan to leave for Mexico on Sunday.
