Kate Winslet

She's one of the darlings of the acting world, and it's easy to see why.

Kate Winslet was her glowing best as she hosted a pre-Bafta party held at the St Martin's Lane hotel last night.

The 28-year-old actress was on sparkling form in a fitted LBD with a plunging neckline coupled with a pair of black peep toe heels.

The party, organised by Harper's Bazaar and Lancome, comes ahead of this Sunday’s BAFTA Awards show to be held at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.

Other guests at the party included Cat Deeley, who looked chic in a cream 60s style mini dress over a pair of black tights and heels and Emilia Fox, who vamped it up with heavy eye make up and a gothic-influenced black mini dress.

Meanwhile, St Trinian's actress Talulah Riley rivalled Ms Winslet in a revealing silver and grey dress and grey heels.

U.S. broadcaster HBO is said to have commissioned a miniseries starring Kate Winslet as a proud, single mother struggling to earn her daughter's love during the Depression in middle-class Los Angeles.

The story is based on the novel by James M. Cain.

Joan Crawford won an Oscar for the lead role in the 1945 Michael Curtiz-directed film adaptation of the novel.

Todd Haynes, who directed Far From Heaven, will write the script along with Jon Raymond.

Haynes will also direct and act as executive producer, along with Pamela Koffler, Christine Vachon and John Wells.

Winslet won the lead actress Oscar for her role in The Reader last year. It was her first win after being nominated five times.
